Friday 5th June. We left Purnululu National Park today at about 07:15. 53Km back down the spring creek track to the junction with the Great Northern Highway. We then back-tracked back towards Kununurra.
We had lunch at a spot overlooking part of the Carr Boyd range then carried on travelling.
At the junction between the Gt. Northern highway and the Victoria highway we took the turn towards Wyndham. Then a few Km’s later turned off down the Gibb River Road. The Gibb is a 850km dirt track, one of only two routes across the Kimberley that runs from just west of Kununurra to Broome. The Gibb is only open during the dry season as the river crossings are all impassable during the Wet.
About 25km down the Gibb River Road is El Questro - Our stop for the next 2 nights. El Questro is a 1,000,000 acre cattle station that also caters for tourists. We’re staying at the Emma Gorge camp in El Questro. The camp is tented cabins with en-suite tented bathrooms attached so we’re not exactly roughing it. The scenery around El Questro will be familiar to anyone who has seen the film ‘Australia’. Much of the filming was done here, as well as the neighbouring Carlton station. The flat-top mountain scenery is the Cockburn ranges (pronounced coh-burn)
